Where Wings Tell Stories: Discovering the Butterfly Garden of Olvekar Wadi
In a garden where flowers bloom and delicate wings dance from one leaf to another, nature tells one of its most beautiful stories—the story of transformation.
Our visit to Olvekar Wadi, Thane, offered a wonderful opportunity to step into the fascinating world of butterflies. Surrounded by lush greenery, flowering plants and fluttering wings, we explored the remarkable relationship between butterflies and the plants that sustain their lives.
The learning experience was led by Prof. Kuldeep Mhatre, Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology at R. K. Talreja College. Alongside him, the owner of Olvekar Wadi guided us through the garden and introduced us to the different stages of a butterfly's life cycle, its host plants and the delicate processes that make a butterfly garden thrive.
It was more than a garden visit. It was an opportunity to understand how a small patch of greenery can become a living sanctuary for butterflies and other pollinators.

Every butterfly begins its journey as a tiny egg, often resting on a leaf that will later become the first source of nourishment for the emerging caterpillar.
Through our exploration of the garden, we learned about the remarkable stages of a butterfly's life cycle—egg, larva, pupa and adult. The owner of Olvekar Wadi, along with prof Kuldeep Mhatre , showed us different stages of this transformation and helped us understand how a seemingly ordinary leaf can hold the beginning of an extraordinary life.
From the tiny egg to the hungry caterpillar, from the stillness of the pupa to the emergence of a winged adult, each stage reveals a remarkable biological process known as complete metamorphosis.
Witnessing these stages brought the life cycle to life in a way that textbooks alone cannot. It reminded us that nature's most extraordinary transformations often begin with the smallest beginnings.
Host Plants: The Green Foundation of Butterfly Life
A butterfly garden is not simply a collection of colourful flowers. It is a carefully connected ecosystem where plants provide food, shelter and suitable places for butterflies to lay their eggs.
During the visit, we explored a variety of host plants that support different butterfly species. We learned how female butterflies select suitable plants for egg-laying and how the availability of these plants influences the survival and development of caterpillars.
The garden revealed an important relationship: while adult butterflies may visit flowers for nectar, their caterpillars often depend on specific host plants for nourishment. Without these plants, many butterflies would struggle to complete their life cycle.
Understanding this relationship helped us appreciate why choosing the right plants is one of the most important steps in creating a butterfly-friendly garden.
A Garden Is More Than Flowers
A butterfly-friendly garden must support more than the adult butterfly. It should provide suitable host plants for caterpillars, nectar sources for adults and a safe environment where different stages of life can unfold.
Learning to Create a Butterfly Garden
One of the most valuable parts of the visit was learning how to create and maintain a garden that attracts butterflies naturally.
Through discussions and demonstrations, we explored how selecting suitable host plants, growing nectar-rich flowers and maintaining healthy vegetation can encourage butterflies to visit and establish themselves in a garden.
We also learned about the importance of caring for plants, understanding their growing requirements and creating an environment that supports the different needs of butterflies throughout their life cycle.
The experience highlighted how even small green spaces can contribute to urban biodiversity when designed with the needs of local wildlife in mind.
Beyond the Wings: Exploring Butterfly Behaviour
Butterflies are not merely beautiful visitors to a garden. Their daily activities reveal fascinating patterns of behaviour, movement and survival.
During the session, prof. Kuldeep Mhatre introduced us to several aspects of butterfly behaviour, helping us understand how these delicate insects interact with their surroundings.
Feeding Behaviour
We learned about how butterflies feed, including their use of a specialised feeding structure called a proboscis to access nectar and other liquid food sources.
Egg-laying Behaviour
The session explored how female butterflies select suitable host plants for laying eggs, ensuring that their offspring have access to appropriate food after hatching.
Mud-puddling
Mud-puddling is a fascinating behaviour in which butterflies gather on moist soil, mud or similar surfaces to obtain minerals and salts. Observing this behaviour helps explain why butterflies may sometimes be found congregating on damp ground rather than flowers.
Migration and Distribution
We also discussed butterfly migration and distribution, exploring how different species occur across geographical regions and how environmental conditions, habitat availability and seasonal changes influence their movements.
These discussions helped us look beyond the beauty of butterflies and appreciate the ecological and biological processes that shape their lives.
Air Layering: Learning a Practical Gardening Technique
Alongside butterfly-focused learning, we were introduced to air layering, a horticultural technique used to propagate certain plants while the selected branch remains attached to the parent plant.
The demonstration introduced us to the basic idea behind encouraging roots to develop on a branch before it is separated and planted independently.
Learning about this technique added another dimension to the visit, connecting plant propagation with the practical skills involved in maintaining and developing a thriving garden.
Butterfly Sightings at Olvekar Wadi
As we explored the garden, the plants and pathways revealed a fascinating variety of butterflies and other insects. Every sighting offered another opportunity to observe colour, wing patterns, feeding activity and the diversity of life supported by the garden.
The following checklist brings together the butterfly species and other organisms recorded during our visit. Some names from the original field list require further identification and taxonomic verification.

Observing Nature Through a Different Lens
The visit to Olvekar Wadi offered a deeper understanding of how biodiversity can be supported through thoughtful gardening and ecological awareness.
From understanding the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly to discovering the importance of host plants, feeding behaviour and habitat selection, every discussion connected us more closely with the natural world.
The experience also highlighted how gardens can become meaningful spaces for biodiversity education, where observation and curiosity encourage a greater appreciation for even the smallest forms of life.
Where Every Leaf Holds a Story
As our exploration came to an end, we carried with us more than a collection of butterfly sightings. We left with a deeper appreciation for the delicate relationships that sustain life in a garden.
Guided by Prof. Kuldeep Mhatre and the owner of Olvekar Wadi, the visit brought together scientific learning, practical gardening knowledge and the simple joy of observing butterflies in their natural surroundings.
The garden reminded us that conservation can begin with something as small as a host plant, a patch of flowers or a space where a butterfly can complete its life cycle.
And perhaps that is the most beautiful lesson of all: when we make room for nature, even the smallest garden can become a world of extraordinary transformations.
